It's hard to believe Cradle of Filth has been in the business over 15 years now. Having formed in England in 1991, the group would go on to dominate the death metal genre for the duration of their career, so much so that they still wield respect and influence today. Their debut album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, arrived in 1994 after a number of demos were tried out, and from there out the band's lineup would change almost too many times to follow. The band's sophomore effort, 1997's Dusk and Her Embrace, was perhaps their most critically acclaimed, and would set the pace for their subsequent releases. Their most recent effort, 2006's Thornography, finds the group in as great a shape as they've ever been.
why we like 'em
It's difficult not to like a band who grins for photos while sporting extensive cadaver makeup-such is Cradle of Filth, a group who defy all expectations and, best of all, don't take themselves too seriously. Their music is over-the-top and theatrical, which darkly engaging, kind of like a more consistent White Zombie. They're still considered death metal, though their sound has expanded in recent years to be rather mainstream hard rock at times. Though they're as popular as ever, they're also not afraid to take risks and play around with their sound a bit, as their varied music catalog can attest.
